Resources

We live in a great time! God has blessed us with the ability to have all the helpful resources we could ever need at our fingertips. Of course, all the resources in the world can never be a substitute for the Word of God or as effective as the Holy Spirit working in our lives.

Having said that, I hope you find at least some of the link, recommendations, and reviews helpful!

5iveAlone

Okay, I admit it. This is gratuitous self-promotion. 5iveAlone is my site.

Dads often feel the weight of responsibility that God has given them to be the primary disciplers of their own children. Sometimes, though, they just aren't sure how to get started. That is why I started 5iveAlone.

At 5iveAlone you will find free downloadable family devotionals. Each devotional includes the devotional itself as well as discussion questions, a memory verse, a suggested song and prayer focus. It also comes with a family activity and activity pages for the kiddos. If you need a jumpstart to doing family worship, 5iveAlone is there to help you!

Family Worship Bible Guide

There are so many excellent resources out there to aid parents who are seeking to make family worship part of their discipleship efforts for their children.

Many of them take a passage of Scripture and provide a devotional for that passage. This is a great way to do it. That is how I write the majority of my own family devotional guides.

The Family Worship Bible Guide takes a different approach- which I love!

It has the family read a whole chapter of Scripture then the book will have 2-3 comments on the chapter along with a thought provoking, open ended question following each comment.

I love how the book does not have the Bible text in it. So, kiddos, get out your Bibles. It causes the family to engage as they take turns reading the chapter from their own Bibles rather than Dad reading it from the devotional.

I also like how it does not rely on binary questions that can be answered with a simple "Yes" or "No." It makes wonderful use of open-ended questions so even the parents have to think over their responses.

Some people may read it and think that the comments make too much use of complex or larger words. It does have some words that younger children may not know or understand. Read them anyhow! It is better to read a longer word to a child and stop to explain it  to them than to never challenge or broaden their vocabulary and knowledge.

This really is an excellent resource for family worship that I whole-heartedly would recommend for those families who are looking for a systematic approach to taking their family book-by-book through the Bible!

Songs that teach

Singing is a natural part of Christian gatherings. This is as it should be since Paul tells us in Ephesians that we are to sing to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

It is great if a song is fun, but first and foremost it should teach you a truth about the One you are singing to or about.

Sovereign Grace is one of our favorite resources for children's songs. They are a lot of fun, but even more, they teach the kids truths about our incredible God!

If you are looking for songs to make a part of your family worship time, I encourage you to check out Sovereign Grace Kids!
